We stopped here for dinner on a Sunday evening while in Bergen. We had a short walk through a misty rain and the warmth was welcome. The decor is eclectic, the lighting soft and low. The views of the water were somewhat limited. We had reservations, and were seated at a table for two very near three very large groups. The rest of the dining room was almost empty. The three groups were extremely loud, and we could not hold a conversation. The menu preferred was limited, choice of 2 starters, 3 entrees, and a house dessert. We chose the fish soup and the jerk chicken caesar salad as starters. The fish soup was delicious. The salad had been requested gluten-free. It arrived with croutons. In addition, though listed as a starter, the waiter argued that ordering this starter and an entree would be “too much”. We had to wait while a second salad was made, but they did toast up some gluten-free bread to serve as croutons. The chicken was very mildly spiced, not what we expected for “jerk chicken.” It was also quite dry. The romaine was in very large pieces and had to be cut to be eaten. We both had the Butcher’s and Gardener’s. One was made without the onion rings so as to be gluten-free. It had not been clear from the description that this is a beef steak with a side of salad, fries and onion rings. The steak arrived rare, which we like. We hadn’t been asked how we like our steak. The fries were tasty and we had been assured that they were cooked in a fryer and oil dedicated only to potatoes, so there was no chance of cross-contamination with gluten. The meal definitely satisfied our craving for something “Western” after a week in Norway and lots of fish. When we inquired about dessert, the two waiters gave conflicting answers as to what was available and seemed quite confused. Overall, the food was good, but not excellent. The service was friendly, but there were several missteps. The decor was warm, welcoming, and relaxing, but the views were limited despite the excellent location.

Although the food was very tasty, the service left much to be desired. My two stars are for food. Service gets zero. We were the first table seated (11 people). The waitress gave my side of the table Norwegian menus. While we were okay with that and were able to decipher the language, we did not know the other side had English menus. This greatly delayed our ordering time. They couldn't make the cocktails from the menu because the bartender doesn't work on Sunday. So, it was highballs only. My elderly, but no less spunky mother couldn't get limes for her seltzer after asking 2 different individuals 3-4 times. We had two children who were jet-lagged and making a go of it for dinner. Had they brought the food out in less than 2.25 hours, my son would have eaten and not fallen asleep. It seems they were swamped with tour groups and woefully under staffed (the back room). Rather than have crappy service on a Sunday when staff don't want to work, perhaps the restaurant should be closed. That would be the respectable thing to do. I guess the priority is to grub a few extra bucks from tour groups who want to eat at a celebrity chef restaurants rather than maintain a good reputation. I would expect better, but then again Marcus wasn't within 500 miles. My brother was right, celebrity chef restaurants can be a toss up when you are outside of the big markets. There is much less accountability.

We've had dinner here the day before Norway's national holiday so unfortunately the restaurant was closed and we had to eat in the bar. There is a smaller menu here but our order came quickly and was tasty. There's a Nordic shuffle board that the waiter explained is how to use, good fun.
